What is a Tray Dryer?

Jan 15, 2022

Dryers are used in a variety of industries, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, paper, pollution control and the agricultural sector. Different materials need to be dried in completely different industries, such as chemicals for research and medical issues, paper for printing and packaging operations, and edible materials for further processing into popular foods and snacks.

Dryers are used to remove liquid or moisture from bulk solids, powders, parts, continuous sheets or other liquids by evaporation or sublimation. Dryers can be divided into two main types: direct and indirect. Direct dryers heat the product convectively by direct contact with the heated air, gas, or burning gas product. Indirect dryers heat the product by conduction through contact with the heated wall.

There are several types of dryers used in the pharmaceutical industry
Fluidized bed dryers
Tray dryers
Vacuum tray dryers
Rotary Dryers

What is a Tray Dryer?

Tray drying refers to dehydrating small pieces of produce by exposing them to a source of hot dry air or to the sun until dry enough to store at ambient temperature with minimal spoilage. Dried foods are lighter and store in a smaller space than canned foods and do not require a constant power supply like frozen foods.

Humanitarian organizations have taken up tray drying technology for use in areas of the world without access to easy energy, where food preservation is critical to maintaining communities under threat of social, economic or environmental pressure. When portability is essential, whether out of necessity or for recreational use, dried foods are the obvious choice.

Tray dryers are used for drying wet products such as raw drugs, chemicals, powders or granules.
Cabinets that include a heater at the bottom are the simplest form of drying and are laboratory ovens.
These ovens are of little value because there is no control over heat transfer or humidity.
It is assumed that the oven is fitted with a fan. In this case, the forced circulation of hot air, increases the heat transfer and reduces the local value concentration. Nevertheless, there is not enough control.

The best disc dryer or tray dryer is the directional circulation form. A controlled flow system provides heated air through the material.
The material is laid on a tray layer for rapid drying. The trays used have a solid, perforated or wire mesh bottom.
The screen is lined with paper to circulate through the dry material rather than through the dry material.
The paper is used as a disposable tray liner to reduce cleaning time and prevent contamination.

Uniform temperature and air in modern tray dryers use a well-insulated cabinet with carefully arranged fans and heating coils.

The alternating arrangement of the shelves allows for even air flow without any obstructions. Installed heaters are designed to help provide reheated air before passing through each frame.

As the air passes through each shelf, a certain amount of heat helps to provide latent heat for vaporization. Proper design allows for reasonable control of heat and moisture in this type of dryer.
