The Advantages of Using A Pharmaceutical Tray Dryer

Sep 27, 2022

There are a variety of different pharmaceutical tray dryers on the market today that can effectively help you reduce waste and increase productivity. They are specifically designed to reduce the heat generated by laboratory heating systems by more than 60%. The drying temperature is increased to maintain the purity of the substance being tested or manufactured. This leads to rapid drying of the sample or compound by preventing it from decomposing during the heating process.

A pharmaceutical tray dryer with an electrically heated air heater base has many benefits. The biggest benefit is that it facilitates the rapid drying of the chemical without increasing the temperature of the sample. When a compound is heated, it usually breaks down into small particles which escape through the vents or with the help of steam. It is therefore important to have good quality trays for continuous drying. This can be effectively achieved with the help of an electric heating system.

Pharmaceutical dryers should be of a high standard and sophistication, with different temperature ranges and types, whether intermittent or continuous. There are essentially three subsequent stages of non-liquid pharmaceuticals 1) synthesis of intermediate products 2) final synthesis 3) pharmaceutical dosage forms which require drying and/or pre-heating before or after the process.

The substances dried in the pharmaceutical industry are divided into three groups: 1) granular materials 2) paste materials 3) solutions and suspensions. Drying these types of material requires specific types of dryers, so it becomes critical to first determine the type of material and then the type of dryer required. The selection of the right dryer is essential for the success of the process and is sub-categorised as follows.

Granular materials: convection dryers with variant trays, bans, fluidised bed, flash or any other custom designed dryer. In addition, vacuum dryers and paddle dryers are too suitable.

Paste materials: tray dryers, belt dryers, rotary flash dryers and spray dryers are all suitable.

Solutions and suspensions: freeze-drying

Further choice of dryer is based on the following components.
Particle size
Thermal properties
Thermal sensitivity
Moisture content
Absorption rate
Adsorption properties etc.

Tray Dryer

There are two main types of tray dryers on the market, including electric and manual bases. The electric base is the common type found in laboratories. It is usually placed on a table or shelf directly facing the steam source. Electric tray dryers consist of multiple nozzles which are located in different locations in the industrial area. This is the most suitable type for hot room applications as it has adjustable nozzles that can be set manually according to the steam temperature.

Manual tray dryers, on the other hand, are not commonly used in laboratories because they are difficult to use and require additional equipment for steam-based drying. However, they are useful when drying solid materials such as pharmaceuticals. They are placed in the pharmaceutical laboratory area next to the workstations so that staff can easily access them for drying.

However, it is important to regularly adjust the temperature of the tray dryer as prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to contamination of the contents of the bottles. To regulate the drying rate of the tray dryer, it is recommended that a certain amount of water is maintained in the container. This can be done by regularly adding water to the container.

In addition, ensure that the desiccant used is strong enough to dry all solids placed in it. Some common desiccants used in desiccators are glycerine, methanol and alcohol. A good quality desiccant will also ensure faster drying. Finally, always choose the heating system that offers you the best options, such as automatic or manual operation.

Both types of drying equipment are very efficient and can significantly reduce waste in the production process. However, if you are looking for maximum drying speed, then it is best to choose an automatic disc dryer. For manual equipment, dryers heated by a gas flame perform best.
